Creative Brief

WordCamp Albuquerque is usually one of the state’s largest tech conferences hosting around 250 people. WordCamps are fun and informal events that typically take place on a 3 day weekend. With so many WordCamps across the world, having a regional vibe for our WordCamp was very important. We felt strongly that 2020 was going to be a big year and that we needed to make this the best WordCamp Albuquerque has yet seen. Sadly, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 100% planned, booked and designed event only about 12 days short of the event itself due to the then new outbreak of COVID-18 across the world.

The results of our combined efforts over 1.5 years would have resulted in a truly out of this world WordCamp. Though we are sad not to be able to celebrate WordCamp with the WordCamp community this year, we look forward to hosting an equally awesome (and possible even more so) WordCamp in a future year. Though some WordCamps have opted to do their presentations online this year, our WordCamp was specifically designed for tactile experiences and inter-human connection. The challenges for hosting a large event online are new and unique to our Team so we will continue to evaluate all options as we move forward into 2021.

THE DESIGN ASSETS

New Mexico has a long history and association with space exploration, big skies, and aliens so I worked with our Team to create a compelling and functional website and brand materials with a galactic vibe. I also designed our WordCamp’s Wapuu, Wapuulien. Wapuulien has NOT been officially released so that’s why he is watermarked here. I was surprised to see just how quickly Wapuu started attracting requests for stickers and memorabilia from Wapuu Collectors around the world. He will be making an appearance at the next WordCamp Albuquerque, whenever that may be. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the design materials we created for the event.
